Sukkot Coffee (established 2001), from northern KZN in South Africa, was the first in this century to cultivate Coffea racemosawith the sole purpose so as to serve it as a cup of coffee. As the visionary to reintroduceRacemosa coffee after 1975 to the world, the “Mother of Racemosa”, (Marlene Cathey from Sukkot Coffee), searched for 3 yearsin the wild on the Elephant Coast, where thisshrub or small tree grows endemically. This was not an easy task, yet with perseverance her efforts were rewarded when sheeventuallywas able to propagate Coffea racemose trees. Racemosa coffee is not only extremely rare in the wild, where it grows endemically, but it is also saidto bethe rarest coffee in the world. It is further believed that Sukkot Coffee was for almost 15-20 years the sole farmer in South Africa to produced Racemosa coffee in orderfor it to be served as a cup of coffee. Sukkot Coffee (established 2001) grows & produces Racemosa coffee for the exporting market as well as the local market in SA. Sukkot coffee supplies roasted or green Racemosa coffee beans. A word of warning Coffea racemosa is a protected treeby theNagoya protocol. This is an international agreement which aims at sharing the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources in a fair and equitable way. Other countries may not propagate it without a prior agreement with South Africa.
